I am convinced that WebXR provides the most hope for a free and open VR ecosystem, so it is great to see a group highlighting the best in WebXR. The WebXR Poly awards were announced, and showcased some interesting projects. Voices of VR has a good summary page with links, and Kent interviewed those responsible for the awards.
I have a few takeaways from the awards and Kent’s interview. First, I tried all the sites that received an award, and only the Mozilla Hub reliably worked on my setup, which is Oculus Quest linked to a Windows desktop running Firefox. Most would not load for whatever reason. I need to debug this, but it shows how early we still are with the technology. I think Babylon.js got robbed regarding best framework, I continue to be impressed with the work they are doing. I also will note the work of Utopiah I really want to start up a group of folks doing “once a days” in VR, but everytime I start a project a quickly get bogged down in technical limitations and glitches. Maybe pairing up a programmer with an artist would be helpful? Let me know if you are either and interested in such a project here on Field of VR.
