Best Software for Volumetric Capture

We have reviewed the Kinect 1, 2 and now Azure Kinect. The performance of these devices has slowly improved, Azure Kinect is a big form factor improvement over the older models that makes field capture much more appealing. But what is the best software to make a 3D Capture?

Microsoft

Their popular 3D Scan software does not support Azure Kinect. This is a big fail, not sure what the holdup is.

Brekel

I’m a big fan of the Brekel software. They have kept up with the different hardware platforms, and offer pointcloud capture, skeleton tracking, Vive tracking and hand tracking. The software is very reasonable and fairly well supported. I will say that multiple Kinect sensor capture required for volumetric recording is still a little hit or miss. The alignment is not great, and the consolidation and cleanup of the multiple datasets is not great.

Ef-eve.com

Supports the latest Azure Kinect, and does a good job of syncing multiple sensors into one file. The ease of workflow is a big plus here.

Other options that don’t currently support Azure Kinect, but are popular with Kinect 1 & 2 are:

Skanect, Faro, Shapify
